What causes fine lines?
Fine lines are one of the earliest visible changes in the skin.
They often appear first around areas of repeated movement, like the eyes, forehead, mouth, and between the brows. They can also become more visible when the skin is dry, dehydrated, or less supported by the structures that help keep it smooth and resilient.
Fine lines are normal. They are part of how skin changes over time. But they are also influenced by light exposure, hydration, barrier health, environmental stress, and daily skin habits.
What Are Fine Lines?
Fine lines are shallow, delicate lines that appear on the surface of the skin.
They are different from deeper wrinkles, which are usually more pronounced and may remain visible even when the face is at rest. Fine lines often become more noticeable when the skin is dry, dehydrated, tired, or exposed to environmental stress.
In many cases, fine lines are not only about age. They are also about how well the skin is hydrated, protected, and supported.
Common Causes of Fine Lines
1. Changes in Collagen and Elastin
Collagen and elastin are structural proteins that help keep skin firm, smooth, and flexible.
As skin changes over time, collagen production gradually slows, existing collagen becomes more fragmented, and elastin becomes less organized. This can make the skin thinner, less elastic, and more prone to visible lines.
These changes happen naturally with time, but they can be accelerated by external stressors, especially ultraviolet radiation.
2. Sun Exposure
Sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors to visible skin aging.
Ultraviolet radiation can damage collagen and elastin, increase oxidative stress, and weaken the skin’s support structure over time. This process is known as photoaging, and it can contribute to fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, pigmentation, roughness, and loss of firmness.

3. Dehydration
Dehydrated skin lacks water.
When the skin is dehydrated, fine lines can look more visible because the surface of the skin appears less plump and smooth. These are sometimes described as dehydration lines.
This does not always mean the skin is dry. Even oily skin can be dehydrated. Dehydrated skin may feel tight, look dull, or show fine creasing, especially around the eyes and forehead.
